“After about a quarter of an hour of this mummery, during which time she had arranged all the cards in order upon the table, she made an examination of my head,” Shelley wrote. Lenormand asked her date of birth, then the first letter of her name, the first letter of her birthplace, and then her favorite animal, color, and number. The two met in Lenormand’s luxurious boudoir, but, as Shelley recounts in her diary, she was soon drawn into Lenormand’s cabinet d’étude to have her fortune read. Thirty years later, when Lenormand was 44 years old, she met with a young Frances, Lady Shelley, a socialite, aristocrat, and friend of the Duke of Wellington. She worked for 40 years as a cartomancer and fortune-teller, advising Joséphine de Beauharnais (Napoleon’s wife), Robespierre, Marat, and other important figures on their fates. Lenormand set off to Paris on her own, where she learned the art of cartomancy-divination using a deck of cards. In 1786, 14-year-old Marie Anne Lenormand ran away from the convent school where she was raised.

Garnethill by denise mina5/29/2023 Some readers found the pacing slow, but I thought it was done well. In fact, I had my nose buried in it while waiting backstage at a dance performance this past weekend (I finished about 10 minutes before my group went on stage). This review avoids specific details.Īt 400 pages Garnethill seemed intimidating but it was a good read that I couldn’t put down. Long story short: A quick note before I begin: many of the novel’s themes center around sexual assault, mental illness, and domestic violence, which may be triggering to survivors. Maureen O’Donnell’s boyfriend is killed violently in her apartment. Despite her procuring an alibi and telling the police she didn’t commit the crime they don’t believe her because of her psychiatric history and tendency to lie. In order for Maureen to clear her name she sets out to find the actual murderer, which leads her to a decades-old scandal that took place at one of the facilities she was admitted to. Brief synopsis: Garnethill is the first book in the Garnethill trilogy.

The foxhole court audiobook5/29/2023 That is all me, probably everyone else who reads this will be fine. Despite my various roadblocks, I still managed to enjoy myself so props for that! That says something about the story and the author! ICEBREAKERS is a college hockey YA novel with a bisexual MC, an inclusive queer cast, an enemies-to-lovers m/m romance, and standout depression representation. I didn’t know how I felt about this book for the first ~20%, but then ultimately ended up enjoying it! I loved the complex family dynamics and our main character Mickey’s relationship with his five older sisters. I’m so happy to see that more college YA is being published! I also really enjoyed the college setting and general dynamics of the hockey team. I wasn’t sold on the romance at first because the “enemies” part of the relationship felt pretty petty. I would have liked to see more of a slowburn tension.

Peter pan rackham5/29/2023 Peter Pan is a fictional character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. Many illustrators have illustrated Peter Pan over the years, but none has surpassed Rackham in the originality and his masterful interpretation of J.M. This is the most beautiful illustrated Peter Pan book. I’ve started to re-scan some of my favorite books, since I was not entirely please with the quality of the old scans. First published in 1906 with all new and improved scans. Presenting here are Arthur Rackham’s Peter Pan in Kensington Garden wonderful illustrations. Many of his work are still in print today. He was one of the most prolific and most loved illustrator of children’s book. This was often followed by a more modestly presented octavo edition in subsequent years for particularly popular books. Many of Rackham’s books were produced in a deluxe limited edition, often vellum bound and sometimes signed, as well as a larger, less ornately bound quarto ‘trade’ edition. During that period, there was a strong market for high quality illustrated books which typically were given as Christmas gifts. Arthur Rackham (1867 – 1939) was an English book illustrator.Īrthur Rackham is widely regarded as one of the leading illustrators from the ‘Golden Age’ of British book illustration which encompassed the years from 1900 until the start of the First World War.

For a young girl, it was a time of adventure and freedom, and Huxley paints an unforgettable portrait of growing up among the Masai and Kikuyu people, discovering both the beauty and the terrors of the jungle, and enduring the rugged realities of the pioneer life.Įd. With an extraordinary gift for detail and a keen sense of humor, Huxley recalls her childhood on the small farm at a time when Europeans waged their fortunes on a land that was as harsh as it was beautiful. As pioneering settlers, they built a house of grass, ate off a damask cloth spread over packing cases, and discovered-the hard way-the world of the African.
